Why I'm Running
"Government is a trust, and the officers of the government are trustees; and both the trust and the trustees are created for the benefit of the people." -- Henry Clay
When I moved here 30 years ago, Palo Alto's parks, public facilities, neighborhoods, environmental leadership, vibrant retail centers, and diversity were renowned. Some of these valued assets are eroding due to budget cuts and larger economic trends. I am passionate about preserving these qualities that make Palo Alto livable and unique.
Council Leadership: I believe our City government needs to be responsive and accountable, its governing processes easily understood and predictable. To that end I will provide clear policy direction to staff and do my best to ensure Palo Altans the highest possible level of services. We must act proactively and creatively to address Palo Alto's economic and environmental health.
Economic Health: In recent years, I have seen the loss of cherished retail stores and major sales tax generators. I am committed to the Comprehensive Plan designation of neighborhood centers and to attracting new, complementary businesses to restore our economic vitality as well as seeking ways to retain our existing retailers. As a small business owner I understand the need for long-range financial planning and to adapt to changing revenues and expenses. I support zero-based budgeting as one way to identify cost savings.
Quality of Life: My four years on the Planning and Transportation Commission and my many years of community involvement have prepared me for the difficult challenges facing Palo Alto in the next four years. Traffic, playing fields, library and other diminished public services are some examples. Additional housing now being built will increase these challenges while not addressing the greater need: affordability. I will bring my Commission experience and a practical, comprehensive approach to meet these challenges in ways that preserve and protect Palo Alto's neighborhoods and unique character.
I would be honored to serve you on the Palo Alto City Council. |
